About Me
In my twenty-six years of teaching experience, I have taught math to students from kindergarten to middle school, designed and taught summer enrichment classes, chaired a math curriculum committee, and attended several Singapore math inservices. All of these experiences have shown me many ways to differentiate instruction to the needs of the student.
I believe that the best teachers are students themselves. Attending conferences, studying books, or learning new techniques from colleagues are ways I constantly grow as a tutor. I also learn a great deal from my students as I watch their unique methods of solving problems.
Every student learns at their own pace, and in their own way. Mistakes are welcomed, and used as learning tools. I help students overcome fears and encourage them to persevere through difficult problems.
Not all students will have the confidence to say that they are confused or don’t understand, so I have learned to read body language and facial expressions, along with verbal communication to gauge the student’s understanding of the lesson and proceed with the next steps.
Like life, math is all about patterns and relationships. I provide hands on manipulatives, math stories and kinesthetic activities to help students engage with the material and to honor their different learning styles. I also find that a sense of humor is a must!
